DuPont Engineering Polymers Electrical Insulation Systems

Welcome to DuPont's IEC/UL Recognized Electrical Insulation Systems (EIS)

When you're designing products that require Electrical Insulation Systems (EIS), DuPont can make your job easier. We offer the industry's largest number of EIS that have been preapproved by Underwriters Laboratories and recognized to IEC standards.

How can this help you?

  • Time and Cost Savings. Final recognition of a system by UL can take a year or two and cost $40,000 (USA) in testing and meeting required standards. Systems that have gained recognitions from UL are ready to go in your application.

  • Experience and Extensive Product Lines. Starting with the discovery over 50 years ago of polyamide 66 (Nylon 66) and polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon®), DuPont has gone on to become one of the world's leading suppliers of electrical insulation materials. Offering a wide range of films, high performance thermoplastic resins, fibers, wire enamels, varnishes, and aramid papers and pressboard products, DuPont is able to meet virtually all the electrical insulation requirements of today's transformers, motors, relays, switches, sensors, and encapsulated coils and components.

  • Experience. DuPont started working with EIS in the early 1960's. Since then, we have become the global leader in UL-recognized EIS.

  • Global Networks. In addition to its extensive product lines, DuPont has together with its distributors, converters, and molders established a network capable of supplying world-class quality products and services virtually anywhere. Our production plants are located in all regions of the world and are either certified or are in the process of being certified to comply with ISO 9002 norms.

About DuPont, EIS, and this web site

What we offer to you is free authorization to use a series of established IEC/UL compliant Electrical Insulation Systems developed by DuPont for manufacturers of transformers, motors, relays, contactors, solenoids, and other electrical applications. These systems include a wide range of DuPont materials used in electrical insulation including films, varnishes, aramid papers and pressboard products, thermoplastic resins, and wire enamels. Also included are tapes, lead wires, varnishes etc from other suppliers all over the world to help you manufacture electrical products anywhere in the world.

EIS type recognition for electrical products was required only in America by those manufacturers looking for UL recognition under UL 1446. However, with the recent adoption by the IEC member nations of IEC 61857 and IEC 61858 covering EIS, the concept of using electrical insulation systems is now a global reality. For those nations automatically adopting IEC standards as National standards, electrical insulation systems are here today for their domestic products as well as exports.

Materials listed on this web site are generally grouped by either DuPont trademark (e.g. Nomex® for aramid papers) or by function (e.g. varnishes from DuPont Performance Coatings or high performance plastics from DuPont Engineering Polymers). However, in each grouping of systems, the thermal classes are the same: Class 130 (B), Class 155 (F), Class 180 (H), Class 200 (N), and Class 220 (R). Once you have found a system that fits your application, simply request a free authorization from us which we will send to you with a copy going to the standards agency, e.g. UL in the USA, of your choice.

You also have access here to case histories, common questions with our answers, material specifications, some regional supplier listings, and the telephone and fax numbers of DuPont representatives in Asia, Europe, and the Americas who can assist you further.

In addition to our extensive product lines for electrical insulation, DuPont along with its distributors, converters, and molders, has established a network capable of supplying world-class quality products and services virtually anywhere. Our production plants are located in all regions of the world and are either certified or in the process of being certified to comply with the ISO 9002 norms.

We are World Class in EIS too, having started our systems framework in the 1960's toward becoming the Global Leader in IEC/UL compliant Electrical Insulation Systems. We hope to prove that to you as you begin to use this web site. Thank you for working with us in a very exciting area, Electrical Insulation Systems for the 21st Century!
